**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quite shy and reserved, plunging into this new chapter was an intimidating thought. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I recognize just how much I’ve grown and the progress I’ve made.
### Taking the Plunge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting aspects at the beginning of university was the task of making friends. If you’re a future student reading this, you might have similar concerns. On my initial day in student housing, just days before the semester started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to the present, and I can confidently say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The secret lay in taking that first step—initiating casual conversations with others who were just as new and uncertain as I was. Gradually, these brief exchanges blossomed into significant connections, and I found a second family here at Imperial. My most important lesson? Embrace your true self. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to encounter others who align with your interests and values. And if you’re not quite ready to jump in immediately, there’s no need to rush—plenty of social events and chances to connect with fellow students are available throughout the year.
### Academic Hurdles: Managing the Workload
Adapting to university’s academic expectations was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level coursework was apparent, and the transition from the first term to the subsequent one felt even more daunting. It’s easy to fall into self-doubt when you observe others seemingly flourishing, but it’s crucial to remember that everyone experiences similar struggles.
When you find yourself confused, odds are that others are grappling with the same issues. The most effective approach is to seek assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or teaching staff. Learning to ask for help when necessary is arguably the most important lesson I’ve gained during my first year.
### Support from Staff: An Invaluable Asset
A highlight of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science faculty. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our questions and providing valuable assistance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the role of a well-being representative allowed me to establish connections with staff, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My recommendation? Fully utilize the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I realize that many of the fears and apprehensions I experienced before entering university were unwarranted. With the abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone. I’ve also learned how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of fun.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a path of growth, connection, and self-exploration. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, remember that while the initial challenges may feel overwhelming, they are all part of the experience—and you will emerge stronger as a result.
