**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always maintained a shy and introverted demeanor, stepping into the unknown felt daunting. However, looking back now, I realize it has been a year brimming with development, challenges, and a great deal of happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be one of your foremost worries. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes officially commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet anyone.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly declare that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share my interests and experiences. All it required was a little small talk and the bravery to engage with others who felt as anxious as I did.

What did this teach me? Taking that initial plunge at the beginning of the year is truly worthwhile. If you don’t feel quite ready or at ease, fear not—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to socialize. And most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with you.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Another challenge I faced was adapting to the course demands and the complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your skills when you observe others studying and think you’re lagging behind.

What supported me through this was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re finding it hard to grasp something, there’s a good chance others are as well. The secret is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek help is probably the most crucial skill I honed during my initial year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of help, I must commend the incredible staff in the Materials department. They sincerely care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our concerns and providing direction.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. One of the best choices I made was to serve as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which proved to be an invaluable experience. There are many opportunities to forge relationships with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university life. My suggestion? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I have learned a great deal. Those anxious thoughts I experienced—before starting university and throughout the year—were often baseless. With the backing of faculty and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. Most importantly, I discovered how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of fun and enjoyment.

As I contemplate my first year in Materials Science and Engineering, I take pride in the progress I’ve made. It has been a journey of personal development, and I eagerly anticipate what the future has in store.
