**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unfamiliar was a formidable challenge. Now, reflecting on an academic year that has been rich in development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can appreciate the extent of my learning and growth.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
A major challenge I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this can be one of the most frightening parts of beginning university life. On my first day in student halls, just days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I am pleased to say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. These relationships have become like a second family to me, both within my course and throughout the university community. How did I achieve this? It commenced with taking small steps—engaging in brief conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain.
What I’ve realized is that taking that first leap is invariably rewarding. If you’re not quite ready to immerse yourself immediately, no need to fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and occasions to connect with others throughout the year. Most crucially, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a varied assortment of individuals at Imperial, you are sure to discover others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more formidable. It can be easy to feel inundated and question your abilities, particularly when observing others studying and appearing to thrive.
What supported me during these challenging times was the understanding that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re grappling with comprehension, it’s likely that others are too. The most beneficial course of action is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or academic staff. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Supportive Faculty
On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for students to flourish and are understanding of the trials we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing direction.
Even though I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with faculty members. This proved to be an invaluable experience, as forging relationships with staff can significantly influence your experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the available resources and support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Essential Insights
Looking back at my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was frequently unnecessary. There exists a vast array of support, both from faculty and our peers, to help you navigate the challenges. I’ve also learned that I am never genuinely alone, and it is feasible to find a balance between enjoyment and the pressures of exams and deadlines.
This year has marked a phase of remarkable growth, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead as I continue my journey in Materials Science and Engineering.
