**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I set out on a journey that brought with it feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. I was about to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. As someone who has always been rather introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was quite outside my comfort zone. Now, as I contemplate the past academic year, I recognize a time filled with development, challenges, and significant enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?

### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is likely a primary concern about commencing university life. I vividly recall my first day in the student residence—I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all initiated with casual conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing the same emotions.

What did I take away from this? Taking that first step to meet others is vital. If you’re not prepared or at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events aimed at fostering connections. Above all, remain authentic. With the rich diversity at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the demands of the coursework and academic intensity presented another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was quite marked, and the shift from the first term to the second appeared even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving students.

What assisted me through this phase was the understanding that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you’re encountering difficulties with a concept, it’s likely that others are, too. The essential point is to ask for assistance—whether it comes from your fellow students or the faculty. This is perhaps the most critical lesson I absorbed during my first year: don’t shy away from seeking help.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are truly remarkable. They sincerely care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support offered until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it ended up being one of the most fulfilling choices I made. It provided me with the opportunity to form connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal chats, getting acquainted with the staff is among the most beneficial actions you can take for your own success. My key takeaway? Utilize the resources and assistance available—you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, it has become clear to me that the apprehension I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unwarranted. With the wealth of support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the pressures of assessments and deadlines with enjoyment and personal development.

As I advance, I’m thankful for the challenges, friendships, and lessons that have defined my first year at Imperial. For anyone on the brink of beginning their own university adventure, bear this in mind: take the plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.
