**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, immersing myself in this novel environment felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?
### Building Friendships: The First Major Hurdle
One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I confronted was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be a concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others.
However, I can now say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. All it took was a bit of casual conversation with fellow students who were equally in search of connection. The main lesson? It’s always beneficial to take that initial step at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals at the university, you’re sure to connect with those who share your interests and principles.
### Managing the Workload and Academic Obstacles
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the heightened workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels and an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a rigorous environment can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when observing others studying and questioning your own abilities.
What assisted me in navigating this was the reminder that we are all experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp something, chances are others are finding it difficult too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year: reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty.
### The Significance of Faculty Support
Regarding faculty, the professors in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and fully understand that students face hurdles. They are compassionate and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support accessible until late in the year, but I wish I had embraced it earlier.
At the year’s onset, I decided to take a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to connect more closely with the faculty, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to cultivate relationships with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit. My primary takeaway from this experience is to maximize the support extended to you—you can never have too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has taught me that the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was predominantly unfounded. There is an abundance of support available from both faculty and fellow students, and you are never truly alone in your challenges. I’ve learned how to strike a balance between enjoying myself and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
