**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had been previously shy and introverted, jumping straight into such a fresh and demanding setting felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of substantial growth, obstacles, and numerous joyful experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where am I now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share those feelings. On my first day in student housing, merely a few days before classes kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had.
The pivotal moment arrived when I compelled myself to engage in light conversation with those who were experiencing similar feelings. Gradually, those initial interactions blossomed into significant relationships. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, all stemming from that courageous first step.
So, what did I take away from this? Firstly, it’s beneficial to step outside your comfort zone early in the journey. If you’re not quite ready immediately, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Secondly, the best approach is simply to be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was quite apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when observing your peers studying and wondering if you measure up.
What assisted me in navigating these hurdles was realizing that I wasn’t navigating them alone. Everyone was contending with similar issues, and if I struggled to grasp something, it was likely that others were too. The fundamental lesson here? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or the faculty, reaching out can make a significant difference.
### The Exceptional Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is genuinely remarkable. The lecturers and tutors are sincerely invested in student success and comprehend the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and exhibited understanding for our difficulties.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support options until late in the year, I wish I had availed myself of them earlier. Assuming the role of well-being representative for my year was one of the proactive steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it proved to be incredibly fulfilling. It facilitated my connection with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable.
If there’s one piece of counsel I would offer, it’s to make the most of the support networks available to you. Whether it’s academic assistance, pastoral support, or just getting acquainted with your lecturers, these resources are designed to help you succeed.
### Main Takeaways
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was oftentimes unwarranted. There is an abundance of support accessible, both from faculty and fellow students, to aid you in overcoming any challenges.
This year has revealed to me that I’m never truly on my own and that balancing academic pressures with moments of happiness is entirely feasible. It’s been a transformative journey, and I am eager to discover what lies ahead.
