**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this fresh chapter of my life felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can assert that it has been a profound transformation. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely one of your major anxieties as well. On my first day at student accommodation, only a few days prior to the official commencement of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These connections have evolved into my second family, both in the university setting and my course. What facilitated this? Taking that first step to interact with others. Even if you’re not prepared to jump in right away, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to bond with others in similar circumstances.
The most significant takeaway? Be authentic. With an array of diverse individuals throughout the university, you are bound to encounter those who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the demands and complexity of the course content represented another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more profound. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.
What assisted me in persevering was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a particular concept, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same challenges. The crucial strategy is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the academic staff. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Guidance from the Staff
The faculty in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely desire for students to succeed and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our inquiries and providing support.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. Stepping into the role of year well-being representative was one of the significant steps I took at the year’s start. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, becoming acquainted with the faculty is one of the greatest favors you can do for yourself. My lesson? Make full use of the resources and assistance on offer—you can never have too much support.
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was frequently baseless. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I’ve realized that I am never truly isolated. More critically, I’ve learned how to find a balance between the pressures of exams and deadlines along with moments of joy and personal development.
Looking back, I recognize a year of change. From facing fears to tackling challenges, my first year in Materials Science and Engineering has been a journey of self-exploration, resilience, and connection.
