**Insights from My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to start my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t a situation my introverted self was used to. Now, reflecting on this past academic year, I recognize it as a path of development, obstacles, and numerous uplifting experiences. But what insights has this year provided, and where do I find myself currently?

### Conquering the Fear of Socializing

One of my greatest initial obstacles was forming friendships—a daunting challenge for many first-year students. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be among your primary worries as well. On my very first day in student housing, just days before classes began, I spent the full day hidden in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships during my time here at Imperial, both within my program and throughout the university. These bonds feel like a second family, and they all started with straightforward conversations with others who were equally anxious.

So, what did I take away from this? Taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not feeling ready or comfortable immediately, don’t fret—there will be abundant icebreaker activities and events designed to help you connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With so many diverse individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the increased complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the increase in difficulty from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. Being in such a rigorous academic setting can occasionally undermine your self-confidence—you might observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.

What aided me during these times was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential lesson is to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to fellow students, and don’t hesitate to approach the instructors—they’re there to help you.

### Establishing Connections with Supportive Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The professors and tutors truly wish for your success and show understanding toward the hurdles students encounter. They maintain open communication throughout the year, addressing any issues we bring up.

I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway here? Take advantage of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unnecessary. With the broad array of support systems available from staff and fellow students, those apprehensions became manageable. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to enjoy university life while balancing the inevitable stress of exams and deadlines.

Looking back, I can see how much I’ve evolved since that anxious freshman who was shyly hiding in their room on the first day. This year has been a transformative journey, and I eagerly anticipate what the next chapter will bring.
