**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed by feelings of anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been rather introverted, plunging into this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I can assert that it has been a profound journey. So, what insights have I gained, and how have I evolved?

### Taking the Plunge: Forming Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this stands as a primary concern when beginning university, and I was no exception. On my initial day in student housing, just days prior to the term’s official commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture outside and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to share that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. These bonds have evolved into my second family, both within my academic program and throughout the university. All it necessitated was a bit of bravery to initiate small talk with individuals who were just as anxious as I was.

What did I discover? Taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not entirely comfortable yet, don’t fret—there are ample icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, I realized that being genuine is essential. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Facing Academic Difficulties
Another prominent challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second posed even greater challenges. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities, particularly when observing others diligently studying and seemingly thriving.

What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone faces similar struggles. If you can’t comprehend something, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The most crucial lesson I acquired in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Be it from colleagues or teaching staff, reaching out can truly change the course of your experience.

### Support from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials Department team is. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open channels of communication with us and consistently extended their support.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the risks I embraced at the onset of the year, and it turned out to be a fulfilling endeavor. It enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which ultimately proved invaluable.

There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and I highly encourage seizing these opportunities. Whether through formal roles, office hours, or informal discussions, fostering those connections can greatly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and support available to you—you can never have an excess of help!

### Reflections
Looking back, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt, both before and during university, was often unfounded. With the broad spectrum of support options—ranging from staff to fellow students—there is always someone ready to assist. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone and have figured out how to juggle exam stress and deadlines while savoring moments of joy and enjoyment.

As I look ahead, I’m eager to continue evolving, learning, and maximizing my time at Imperial. To anyone embarking on their own university adventure, remember: take the plunge, seek assistance, and above all, be yourself.
