**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and shy, diving into the deep end was far from my usual comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyable moments, I can appreciate what I’ve learned and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was establishing friendships. For many incoming students, this is a predominant concern when starting university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, just before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, feeling too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships in my life. My experience at Imperial has provided me with a second family, beginning with small interactions with individuals who were experiencing the same feelings as me.

What did I take away from this? Taking that first brave step at the beginning of the year is invariably rewarding. If you’re not quite ready or at ease straightaway, don’t stress—there will be countless icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most crucially, I discovered that authenticity is vital. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating Academic Challenges

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic load and the heightened complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second proved even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or to question your skills when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.

What helped me persevere during those moments of uncertainty was recognizing that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The most critical lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from classmates or the faculty, reaching out for support can significantly impact your experience.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of help, the team in the Materials department is simply outstanding. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept communication lines open and actively sought to address our issues.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative was one of the risks I took early in the year, and it turned out to be an enriching experience. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which was incredibly beneficial.

There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the assistance and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much support!

### Reflections Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the concerns I held—both before commencing university and throughout the year—were unfounded. With the abundant support available from staff and fellow students, those worries became manageable.

This year has demonstrated to me that I’m never truly alone, even during stressful periods such as exam times and deadlines. It has also illustrated how to balance diligence with enjoyment, optimizing my university experience.

To all those gearing up for their first year: face the challenges head-on, take those leaps of faith, and don’t be afraid to seek help. You will grow more than you ever imagined.
