**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about the future as I geared up to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Taking such a significant step into the unknown was outside the comfort zone of my previously introverted self. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve grown and how far I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day at student housing, just before the term commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently declare that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family.

What aided me? Taking that first step into the unknown. Beginning with light conversation and engaging with others in comparable situations was pivotal. If you’re not prepared to jump right in, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a rich tapestry of diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic demands and intensity was another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s common to feel inundated or question your competencies, particularly when surrounded by high-achieving peers.

What helped me during those moments of self-doubt was understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial thing is to seek assistance—whether from your fellow students or the teaching professionals. Learning to ask for support turned out to be one of the most significant lessons I gleaned from my first year.

### The Value of Support and Community

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue and offered various types of assistance.

Though I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support offered until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was another bold move I made early on, and it became a gratifying experience. This role allowed me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which became incredibly valuable. Whether through official roles or informal interactions, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best decisions you can make for your well-being. My key takeaway? Utilize the support frameworks available to you—you can never have too much help!

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unfounded. With the ample support accessible from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I learned how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun, and I evolved in ways I never anticipated.

To anyone about to embark on their own university adventure: embrace the challenges, take those courageous leaps, and remember—you can handle this.
