**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, dread, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been somewhat introverted, jumping into something unfamiliar wasn’t exactly aligned with my comfort level. Reflecting on the past academic year now, I recognize it as a time of tremendous personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where am I currently?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was making new friends. If you are a prospective student reading this, it’s likely something you’re concerned about as well. On the day I moved into my residence, just days before the term started, I spent the entirety of that day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve found some of the finest friends I’ve ever had—individuals who feel like a second family.
The secret? It all began with casual conversations with those who were experiencing the same feelings as me. My takeaway from this situation is that it’s always beneficial to take that first step. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With a wide array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Workload and Academic Expectations
Another notable challenge was acclimating to the workload and complexity of the curriculum. There was certainly a clear transition from A-levels, and an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. It’s natural to feel inundated and doubt your skills, particularly when you observe others studying and appearing to grasp concepts at a quicker pace than you.
What assisted me during this time was the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling to comprehend a topic, it’s likely that others are too. The most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from your classmates or academic personnel, don’t be afraid to reach out. You aren’t expected to navigate everything alone.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the team in the Materials department is remarkable. They genuinely aspire for students to thrive and fully recognize the challenges we endure. Over the course of the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and extending support. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty more closely, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are myriad ways to engage with the faculty, and I strongly encourage doing so. My key takeaway from this experience is to maximize the support offered to you. You can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
To sum up, this year has imparted the lesson that the anxiety I felt pre-university—and even throughout the year—was largely unfounded. With the plentiful support from both staff and peers, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve acquired the skills to balance enjoying university life with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
If there’s one piece of counsel I would share with incoming students, it’s this: embrace the obstacles, seek help when necessary, and take time to appreciate the journey.
