**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into such a substantial change felt daunting. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and cherished memories. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was forming connections. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar concerns. I vividly recall my initial day in student housing. I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too anxious to step out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had. These bonds have evolved into my second family during my time at Imperial. How did this transformation occur? It all began with casual conversations and engaging with peers who were just as apprehensive as I was.
What did this experience teach me? First, it’s essential to take a leap of faith at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable immediately, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to socialize. Second, always stay true to yourself. With such a diverse population at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Addressing Academic Challenges
Another significant challenge was adapting to the course load and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel engulfed by doubt or believe you’re falling behind when you see others studying diligently.
What assisted me during these tough times was understanding that everyone experiences the same struggles. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others are grappling with it too. The key is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to ask for help may be the most vital skill you can acquire in your first year.
### Establishing Relationships with Faculty
Speaking of faculty, I can’t stress enough how encouraging the Materials Science department is. The lecturers and tutors genuinely aspire for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They keep communication channels open and actively respond to student inquiries throughout the year.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until later in the year, I wish I had sought them out sooner. Early in the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are various avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Utilize the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has taught me that the anxiety I felt prior to and during my university journey was largely misplaced. Thanks to the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to navigate the stresses from exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey. It has illustrated the importance of stepping beyond my comfort zone, seeking help when necessary, and seizing the opportunities that present themselves.
