**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I got ready to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new chapter felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable moments, I realize how much it has changed me. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Taking the Bold Step: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered initially was making friends. For numerous newcomers, this aspect of beginning university is among the most anxiety-provoking, and my experience was no exception. On my first day in student accommodation, I devoted hours to staying in my room, feeling too overwhelmed to step outside and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had.
The pivotal moment came when I made the decision to challenge myself to engage in small talk with others going through similar experiences. It wasn’t straightforward in the beginning, but those initial discussions paved the way for the establishment of a second family here at Imperial. My most significant takeaway? Take that leap of faith early on. Even if you’re initially hesitant or uncomfortable, don’t stress—there are myriad icebreakers and activities created to facilitate connections with others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another major hurdle. The shift from A-levels to university-level coursework presented its challenges, and the transition from the first term to the second was notably more marked. It’s easy to become daunted and doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying with such confidence.
What benefited me most was the reminder that we are all navigating similar experiences. If something is difficult for you, chances are, others are grappling with it too. The crucial factor is to seek assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to reach out for help is a vital skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Support
On the topic of support, I cannot stress enough how fantastic the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely care about student success and consistently demonstrate understanding towards the challenges we face. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication with us and offered numerous resources for support.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support options until later in the year, I do wish I had engaged earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it became an immensely fulfilling experience. It allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or casual interactions, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best choices you can make for your well-being. My suggestion? Fully leverage the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
In reflecting on the last year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I harbored before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unnecessary. There’s abundant support accessible, from both staff and fellow students, to assist you in facing any challenges. I’ve also discovered that I’m never genuinely alone, and that it’s entirely feasible to juggle academic pressures like exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.
This year has been a remarkable journey of growth, and I am thankful for the experiences that have shaped who I am. To anyone gearing up to commence their university journey, remember that feeling nervous is completely normal. Embrace the opportunities that come your way, take those leaps of faith, and don’t hesitate to lean on the support available to you.
