**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubts about what awaited me. I was on the verge of embarking on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant growth, challenges, and abundant enjoyment. So, what have I discovered, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was making friendships. For many new students, this represents a primary concern about commencing university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, merely days before term officially commenced, I spent the full day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my program and across the university. It merely required stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.

So, what have I discovered? To begin with, taking that first step at the year’s start is vital. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable initially, don’t be alarmed—there are countless ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Moreover, the best approach is simply to be yourself. With the vast diversity found in university, you are sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Transition

Adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material represented another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more substantial. It wasn’t always straightforward to maintain confidence in this new academic setting, particularly when it seemed like others were flourishing while I faced difficulties.

What aided me during this time was the acknowledgment that everyone has their struggles. If something isn’t clear, it’s likely that others are grappling with the same confusion. The crux is to seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson I learned in my first year—do not hesitate to reach out to your classmates or faculty for help.

### The Value of Supportive Staff

Regarding staff, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and tutors truly desire for students to succeed and are fully aware of the obstacles we encounter. They empathize with us and maintain transparent communication throughout the year to tackle any issues that arise.

Though I didn’t fully capitalize on the available pastoral support until the tail end of the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Initially, I stepped out of my comfort zone by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to develop relationships with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and nurturing these relationships can significantly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Leverage the support that’s at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the year, I realize that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive range of support options from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to balance the stress arising from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun, and I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated.

If you’re preparing to embark on your own university journey, remember that feeling nervous is completely normal. But also understand that, over time, with effort and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone, you’ll discover your place and flourish.
