**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what was ahead. I was on the verge of starting my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unfamiliar was unfamiliar territory for me. Reflecting now, this year has been a pivotal one—filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights did this year offer me, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was the task of making friends. If you’re a future student reading this, you may resonate with those feelings. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, just days before the term started, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family.
How did I manage to reach this point? It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who shared my experience. I found that stepping out of my comfort zone at the beginning of the year was incredibly rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease initially, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreakers and activities to facilitate meeting others. Above all, I realized that being authentic is crucial. With a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re bound to discover those who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and seemingly thriving.
What assisted me in navigating this challenge was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find something confusing, it’s likely others are too. The most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether from fellow students or faculty, reaching out for assistance can make a significant difference.
### Fostering Connections with Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we face. They maintain open lines of communication with students throughout the academic year to address any concerns.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so sooner. Early on, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my initial year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt before and during university was often unnecessary. There are ample support systems—ranging from faculty to fellow students—ready to help you face challenges. I’ve learned that I’m not truly alone and that it’s feasible to strike a balance between the pressures of exams and deadlines with enjoyable moments.
This year has been a journey of personal growth, and I eagerly anticipate what the next chapter will bring.
