**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Immersing myself into the unfamiliar had never been a norm for my shy and introverted nature. Now, upon reflection, I observe an academic year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights has this year imparted to me, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships

One of the biggest obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day at student housing, just days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most enduring friendships I’ve ever experienced.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—something I never imagined would happen that first day. It began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing similar feelings. The most significant lesson I gleaned? Take the initiative early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there are ample icebreaker events and chances to meet fellow students. And above all, be authentic. With such a varied group of individuals at university, you’re certain to encounter others who align with your interests and principles.

### Addressing Academic Hurdles

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the higher complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more prominent. Maintaining confidence proved difficult, particularly when I observed others studying and felt as though I was falling behind.

What aided me during this was recognizing that everyone is experiencing a similar journey. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely others are as well. The essential step is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### Support from Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and tutors genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we face. They maintain open channels of communication throughout the year, addressing our concerns and providing support.

I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until near the end of the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. Early on, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge relationships with staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these opportunities. My most significant realization? Never hesitate to utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve discovered that the apprehension I felt before and during university was frequently unfounded. With the vast support offered by faculty and fellow students, there’s always someone available to help. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated and that balancing exam and deadline stress with moments of happiness and enjoyment is achievable.

As I progress, I am thankful for the development I’ve undergone and the relationships I’ve nurtured. To anyone preparing to embark on their own university adventure: take the plunge, seek assistance, and fully embrace the experience.
