**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety as I prepared to embark on my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, the idea of jumping into this new phase was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Taking the Plunge: Forming Connections

One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was the task of making connections. For numerous incoming students, this is often one of the largest concerns. I distinctly recall my first day in student housing, retreating to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I could have hoped for. These bonds have become like a second family to me, both within my program and beyond at the university.

The crucial lesson I took away? Embrace that leap early. Even if you don’t feel prepared or are outside your comfort zone, there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. In such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re likely to connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Conquering Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the academic rigor of university also presented a major challenge. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the shift from the initial term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your skills when in the company of high-achieving classmates.

What assisted me in persevering was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty with a concept, it’s likely that others are facing the same issue. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or faculty. Learning to request help is possibly the most crucial skill to cultivate in your freshman year.

### Assistance from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and support staff are genuinely invested in the success of students and are consistently understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They promote open dialogue throughout the year and are always willing to listen to student feedback.

Though I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had seized the opportunity sooner. One of the best choices I made was taking on the role of well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal positions or informal exchanges, cultivating relationships with your professors and tutors can significantly enhance your experience. My key takeaway? Fully leverage the support services at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In reflecting on my first year, I understand that many of the anxieties I faced—both prior to and during university—were unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while also savoring joyful moments.

To any future students reading this: accept the anxiety, take the leap, and don’t hesitate to seek help. University is a period for personal growth, and you’ll find that the obstacles you encounter will ultimately enhance the experience.
