**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxious excitement as I prepared to embark on my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a freshman, I was venturing into an unfamiliar territory, and for someone who had always been quite introverted, this felt like a significant step. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize a journey rich with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered initially was establishing friendships. For countless incoming students, this ranks as one of the primary concerns about commencing university life, and I was certainly part of that group. On my first day of settling into my accommodations, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life.
These bonds didn’t emerge instantly, but they began with modest beginnings—simple exchanges with individuals who were just as new and uncertain as I was. Gradually, these interactions transformed into a second family here at Imperial. My main takeaway? Don’t hesitate to take that risk at the onset of the year, even if it feels awkward. If you’re not prepared immediately, there’s no need to fret—numerous icebreaker events and avenues to engage with others are available. Most crucially, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another prominent challenge was acclimating to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when you observe others seemingly succeeding while you feel like you’re lagging.
What benefited me the most was the realization that I was not alone in this experience. Everyone is navigating similar waters, and if you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely others are too. The crucial point is to seek help—whether it’s from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning how to ask for assistance is arguably the most vital skill you can acquire in your first year.
### The Significance of Support Systems
On the topic of support, I must highlight how phenomenal the staff in the Materials department are. They are truly invested in student success and display genuine empathy towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and offered various forms of assistance.
While I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into it sooner. Early on, I ventured out by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with staff members. This turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My recommendation? Utilize the support and resources at hand—you can never have an excess of backing.
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on this year, I’ve discovered that much of the anxiety I felt prior to university—and even during the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive array of support options from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. This year has enlightened me on how to juggle the stress from examinations and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment.
Looking forward, I feel more assured and equipped for the challenges that lie ahead. My inaugural year at Imperial has been a transformative journey, and I eagerly anticipate what the future has in store.
