**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A little over ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted and hesitant, venturing into the unknown seemed quite intimidating. However, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences, I can now appreciate how much I’ve grown and learned.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making New Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was the quest to form friendships. For a large number of incoming students, this is one of the most formidable aspects of embarking on university life. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Now, after some time has passed, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with here have come to feel like a second family to me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in small discussions with others who were navigating the same situation.
What lessons did I take away from this? First, it’s essential to take that crucial leap of faith at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t be alarmed—there will be numerous icebreaking activities and chances to meet others. Second, being your authentic self is the best approach. With such a varied student community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Addressing Academic Difficulties
Another obstacle I encountered was adapting to the academic workload and the intricacy of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when you witness others studying and question if you’re keeping pace.
What provided me solace during these times was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping something, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial aspect is to seek assistance—whether from your fellow students or the teaching staff. This is arguably the most vital lesson I discovered in my first year: don’t hesitate to reach out for help.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty within the Materials Science department have been amazing. They sincerely want students to thrive and show compassion towards the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and were always willing to address our issues.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Taking on the role of year well-being representative was one of the steps I embraced at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. It enabled me to forge strong connections with faculty members, which proved to be tremendously beneficial.
There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and I highly suggest seizing these opportunities. Whether through formal roles, office hours, or informal chats, nurturing relationships with faculty can significantly impact your experience. My key takeaway here is straightforward: utilize the support systems accessible to you. You can never have an excess of help!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my initial year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced—both preceding my university start and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There are abundant resources and support networks available, from academic staff to fellow students, to aid you in navigating the hurdles.
This year has illustrated to me that I’m never truly isolated. It has taught me how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and connection. Most importantly, it has been a year of personal growth, affirming that stepping outside of your comfort zone can result in amazing experiences and enduring friendships.
If you’re on the brink of beginning your university adventure, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel apprehensive. However, be assured that you’re not alone, and an entire community is prepared to support you every step of the way.
