**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I readied myself for my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had previously been shy and introverted, plunging into this new chapter felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and innumerable joyful experiences. So, what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. Entering university can be a lot to handle, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be feeling the same emotions. On my initial day in the student residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entirety of the day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can say with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had.
The pivotal moment occurred when I made the choice to challenge myself to engage in small talk with others who were in a similar situation. That leap of faith allowed me to create a second family here at Imperial. If there’s one takeaway, it’s that taking that first step to connect with others is always rewarding. And if you’re not prepared to do so immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and occasions to meet new people throughout the year. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who share your passions and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the academic workload and difficulty was yet another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level study was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your abilities, especially when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re keeping pace.
What assisted me the most was the realization that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was grappling with the same hurdles, and if I found something confusing, chances are others did too. The important lesson here? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether from fellow students or the teaching staff, asking for help is essential in your first year.
### Establishing Relations with Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is phenomenal. The lecturers and support staff are genuinely invested in student success and understand the challenges we face. They maintain open channels of communication with us throughout the year and are perpetually willing to assist.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which was immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main lesson? Fully utilize the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I experienced before starting university were unwarranted. There’s a wealth of support accessible, both from staff and fellow students, to help you navigate university life. This year has taught me that I’m never truly isolated and that balancing stressors like exams and deadlines with joyful and enjoyable moments is possible.
As I progress forward, I’m grateful for the growth, connections, and memories I’ve accumulated during this transformative year. To anyone about to start their university adventure, keep in mind: take that leap, seek assistance, and fully embrace the journey.
