**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed by nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being inherently shy and introverted, embracing the unknown was far from my usual experience. Reflecting back, I recognize an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment. What insights have I gained from this experience, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was the quest to forge friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this concern may resonate with you as well. On my initial day in student accommodations, mere days before the term kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room. The very idea of stepping out and making introductions felt daunting.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my program and throughout the university community. All it required was venturing out of my comfort zone and striking up casual conversations with others who shared my uncertainties.

What was my takeaway from this? Taking that first step at the outset of the year is essential. If you’re not quite ready or feeling uneasy, fear not—there will be numerous ice-breakers and activities planned to assist you in connecting with others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With the diverse array of individuals at the university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Hurdles

Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the increased workload and complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. Being in such a demanding atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind.

What aided me during this period was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The key is to reach out for assistance—whether that’s from fellow students or faculty members. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill to hone in your first year.

### The Supportive Faculty

On the subject of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and tutors genuinely care about student success and are aware of the hurdles we face. They ensure open lines of communication throughout the year and are always ready to lend a helping hand.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until the end of the academic year, I wish I had embraced it earlier. Early on, I took a leap by assuming the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and I highly encourage seizing those opportunities. My key lesson? Never shy away from utilizing the resources and support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Key Takeaways

This year has shown me that much of the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unfounded. With a multitude of support options from faculty and peers, I’ve realized that I’m never entirely alone. I’ve also learned to strike a balance between having fun and managing the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.

In retrospect, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey. It’s been a voyage of personal development, learning, and forming lasting connections that I will treasure for years ahead.
