**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was steeped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I readied myself to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Entering this uncharted territory was not something my introverted and quiet nature was used to. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a time that was not only challenging but also revolutionary, characterized by personal development, academic challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I confronted was developing new friendships. For numerous incoming students, this ranks among the top concerns about beginning university, and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, just mere days before classes started, I spent an entire day tucked away in my room, too anxious to step out and present myself to others.

Fast forward to today, I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a new family, and it all began with brief conversations with individuals who were equally nervous as I was.

What did I take away from this? Taking that first courageous step is essential. If you’re not ready or at ease right from the start, don’t worry—there are plenty of ice-breaker sessions and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to find others who connect with your personality.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the change from the first term to the second felt even more abrupt. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when surrounded by peers who appear to have everything under control.

What aided me during those times was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If there’s something you find perplexing, chances are others are grappling with it as well. The key is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or instructors. This might be the most significant skill you can nurture in your first year.

### The Significance of Support

Regarding staff, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials department team is. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and providing assistance.

I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support available to me until the year was almost over, and I wish I had leveraged it earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the steps I embraced at the onset of the year, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. It allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which has proven incredibly beneficial.

There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these opportunities. Whether through formal roles or informal encounters, getting to know your lecturers and tutors can create a tremendous impact. My greatest takeaway here? Don’t hesitate to tap into the resources and support systems accessible to you—you can never have too much help.

### Insights Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced, both before and during my time at university, was frequently unfounded. There is a wealth of support available, whether from faculty or fellow students, to assist you in navigating any challenges.

This year has illuminated for me that I’m never genuinely alone, even during stressful periods like exams and deadlines. More importantly, it has taught me how to harmonize hard work with enjoyment, maximizing my university experience.

If you’re about to embark on your own journey, remember to take that step forward, embrace the support surrounding you, and above all, be true to yourself. You’re not just here to study—you’re here to evolve, connect, and excel.
