**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my path as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Plunging straight into this new phase was hardly something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Now, as I reflect on my inaugural academic year, I recognize it as a time rich with personal development, obstacles, and numerous joyful moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered in the beginning was forming friendships. This is often one of the most anxiety-inducing facets of commencing university for many new students, and I certainly felt the same. On my initial day of moving into my residence—just a few days ahead of the term officially starting—I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted by the idea of venturing out and introducing myself to fellow students.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become akin to a second family, both within my course and throughout the university. It all began with casual dialogues with others who were navigating the same situation as me.
What did I take away from this experience? I discovered that taking that first brave step is essential. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine! Universities provide ample icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most crucially, I learned that being true to yourself is the most effective strategy. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another notable challenge involved adapting to the heightened workload and the intricacy of the course content. The leap from A-levels to university-level study was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more formidable. It’s easy to get overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when witnessing others diligently studying and presuming they have everything figured out.
What aided me during this period was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential approach is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. This is perhaps the most important lesson I acquired during my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help when necessary.
### Establishing Connections with Faculty
Speaking of assistance, I must reiterate how remarkable the Materials Science faculty are. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are acutely aware of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our worries and offering guidance.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support offered until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had availed myself of it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a plunge by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My principal takeaway here is to leverage the resources and support systems available—you can never have too much help!
### Insights from the Year
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unfounded. With the extensive array of support options from faculty and fellow students, there’s always someone you can rely on. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned to balance enjoying my time while managing the inevitable stresses of exams and deadlines.
This year has been a transformative odyssey, and I’m thankful for the challenges and growth it entailed. To anyone gearing up for university, my message is straightforward: take the plunge, embrace the support surrounding you, and don’t forget to savor the journey!
