**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, immersing myself in such a new environment felt akin to jumping into the deep end. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and endless joyful moments. But what insights have I gained from this experience, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was making friends. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely one of the concerns you share as well. On my first day in student housing, merely days before the semester officially kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve found a second family, both within my cohort and throughout the university. All it required was a bit of casual conversation with people who were experiencing the same feelings as me.
What did I glean from this? Taking a chance at the beginning of the year is invariably worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, don’t fret—there are many icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another notable challenge was adapting to the heightened academic demands and rigorous content. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when observing others studying and pondering if you measure up.
What aided me through this was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, chances are you’re not the only one. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials Science department are outstanding. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our queries and providing counsel.
Though I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out earlier. One bold step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to establish connections with staff, and doing so can enhance your university experience significantly. My key takeaway? Make the most of the assistance and resources accessible to you—you can never have too much support.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the trepidation I experienced—both prior to university and during my time here—was frequently unfounded. With the plethora of support options available from staff and peers, I’ve learned that I’m never entirely alone. More crucially, I’ve discovered how to harmonize enjoying myself with navigating the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It’s been a period of growth, resilience, and connection, and I’m eager to see what the future has in store as I advance in my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
