**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this fresh chapter felt daunting. Reflecting back, I recognize a year replete with personal development, hurdles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be one of your primary concerns as well. On my first day in university housing, a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, I can assertively say that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships in my life—companions who feel like a second family. It merely required stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar situations.

What did this teach me? Taking that first leap is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I discovered the importance of being authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter people who align with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles

Another notable challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and appearing to succeed.

What assisted me through this period was the recognition that everyone is navigating a similar experience. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp something, it’s likely that others are as well. The secret is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for support is arguably the most critical skill to hone during your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely aspire for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we face. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. At the year’s outset, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My biggest lesson from this is to fully embrace the available support—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In summary, this year has demonstrated that the apprehension I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by staff and fellow students, those anxieties can be alleviated. I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated and that it’s feasible to enjoy university life while managing the unavoidable pressures of examinations and deadlines.

Looking back, I take pride in how far I’ve progressed and feel excited for the future. For anyone preparing to begin their university journey, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, embrace your true self, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance.
