**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, immersing myself in this new experience felt quite intimidating. Now, as I look back on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and cherished memories. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges of beginning university was the idea of forging friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you may relate. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the day cloistered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve established some of the most rewarding friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment arrived when I made the effort to initiate casual conversations with others who shared my situation. Gradually, these exchanges evolved into substantial connections. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all thanks to taking that crucial first step.
So, what’s the moral? Be courageous and take that initial leap. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be plenty of ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Workload
Another major hurdle was adapting to the work demands and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.
What assisted me in managing this was the recognition that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was dealing with similar challenges, and chances were, if I encountered difficulties, others did too. Learning to ask for assistance became a vital skill. Whether it involved reaching out to friends or seeking support from staff, I discovered that collaboration and communication are essential for overcoming academic challenges.
### The Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication and offered continuous assistance.
Although I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support available until late in the year, I now wish I had done it earlier. One of my best decisions was to become a year well-being representative. This position not only empowered me to advocate for my peers but also afforded me the chance to build rapport with staff members. Developing relationships with your lecturers and tutors is invaluable, and there are numerous ways to accomplish this.
My key takeaway? Utilize the support systems at your disposal. Whether it’s academic aid, mental health resources, or pastoral support, there’s no such thing as receiving too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was generally unfounded. With the abundance of support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of happiness and fun, and I’ve developed significantly as an individual.
To those about to begin their university journey: embrace the challenges, take those bold steps, and don’t hesitate to seek help when necessary. You’ll be astonished at the growth you can achieve in just one year.
