**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, a wave of nervousness, anxiety, and uncertainty washed over me as I stood on the brink of a new beginning. I was preparing to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been introverted and cautious, venturing into the unfamiliar was anything but easy. Now, as I reflect on an academic year characterized by development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I can’t help but ponder on the insights I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, you may be experiencing similar feelings of trepidation. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days prior to the semester’s commencement, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.

Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a supportive community—individuals who journey alongside me and comprehend my experiences. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were equally anxious.

So, what insights did I gain? First, take a risk at the year’s start. If you don’t feel ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Secondly, be authentic. With such a diverse student body, you’re certain to find peers who resonate with your perspective.

### Adjusting to the Academic Landscape

Another major challenge was adapting to the volume of work and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second proved even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying and appearing to thrive.

What assisted me in navigating this was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re confused about a topic, it’s likely others are too. The key is to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year—don’t hesitate to reach out to classmates or faculty.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish for their students to succeed and are understanding of the challenges we face. They foster open communication throughout the academic year and are always ready to assist.

I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until the year’s end, but I wish I had sought it out sooner. One of the best choices I made was taking on the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge relationships with staff members, which became invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and I strongly encourage capitalizing on these chances. My primary takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the support provided to you—it exists for that very purpose!

### Takeaways

Reflecting back, this year has taught me that the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the range of support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a voyage of growth, self-exploration, and connection. If you are about to embark on a similar journey, understand that it’s natural to feel anxious—but also recognize that you have the capacity to conquer those fears and flourish in this new chapter of your life.
