**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, leaping into this new experience was intimidating. Now, upon reflection, I recognize a year that has been life-changing—filled with personal advancements, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset was forming friendships. Beginning university can be quite daunting, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be feeling the same way. On my first day in student housing, I spent hours retreating to my room, too anxious to leave and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life here—friends who have become like a second family.

What aided me? Taking that first leap of faith. Even if you feel uncertain or hesitant, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. I also understood the significance of being genuine. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Shift
Adapting to the demands of academic life and the heightened complexity of university curriculum was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more demanding. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt yourself while noticing others studying and thriving.

What supported me during those times was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find it difficult to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are, too. The important thing is to seek help—whether from classmates or faculty members. This is possibly the most crucial lesson I acquired in my first year: don’t be reluctant to ask for assistance.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Regarding support, the staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we face. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and offered various types of assistance.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care available until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took at the beginning. This role enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through official positions or informal encounters, getting to know your lecturers and tutors can significantly influence your experience. My suggestion? Fully utilize the resources and support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I have come to understand that many of the worries I had—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—were baseless. With the abundant support from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of happiness and accomplishment.

If I could share one piece of wisdom with incoming students, it would be this: embrace the hurdles, take those leaps of faith, and don’t shy away from requesting help. University is a period meant for growth, and with the right attitude and support, you will flourish.
