**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I braced myself to commence my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unknown was a significant departure from my comfort zone, given my naturally shy and introverted disposition. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I realize just how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve progressed.
### Confronting My Initial Challenge: Building Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the thought of forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely a concern on your mind as well. On my very first day in my student residence, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. My university journey has gifted me with a second family, both within my program and throughout Imperial. It simply required me to step outside my comfort zone and engage in brief conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same feelings of newness.
What’s the takeaway? Taking that initial step is always worthwhile. If you aren’t ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at university, you’re sure to encounter people who share your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was noticeable, and the transition from the first term to the second proved to be even tougher. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your abilities when you observe others studying and question if you’re measuring up.
What helped me through this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something doesn’t make sense to you, it’s likely that others feel the same way. The crucial thing is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty members. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill you can cultivate in your freshman year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. They truly care about student success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and extended support whenever we required it.
I regret not taking full advantage of the pastoral support offered until late in the year, but I wish I had acted on it sooner. At the year’s start, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative. This experience enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support systems available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before entering university—and even throughout the year—often proved unwarranted. With the broad spectrum of support offered by both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.
More importantly, I’ve learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and fun. University is a period for personal development, and while challenges are unavoidable, they also present opportunities for learning and flourishing.
As I continue forward, I’m eager to discover what the next chapter of my university journey will bring.
