**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, the thought of plunging into university life was intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period filled with personal growth, hurdles, and a considerable amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Making Connections: The Primary Challenge

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also rank high on your list of worries. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a supportive community, and it all started with a few casual conversations with others experiencing the same feelings.

So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. Even if you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t panic! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Above all, just be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who click with you.

### Addressing the Workload and Academic Hurdles

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was notable, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more significant. Being thrust into such a demanding academic atmosphere can occasionally undermine your self-assurance. You may observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating similar waters. If something is unclear, it’s almost certain that others share your struggle. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the key lesson I’ve gleaned in my first year—never hesitate to reach out to fellow students and faculty.

### The Value of Staff Support

On the topic of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize the difficulties faced by students. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our issues and providing aid. I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier.

At the year’s outset, I bravely stepped into the role of a year well-being representative. This position offered me the chance to connect with the staff on a deeper level, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for your well-being. My biggest takeaway from this experience is to leverage the support available; you can never have an excess of assistance!

### Final Reflections

Ultimately, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was largely unfounded. There are countless support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, ready to assist you in overcoming challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never isolated, and I’ve figured out how to juggle enjoying life alongside the stress of exams and deadlines.
