**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with a blend of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, leaping into this new chapter of my life felt quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the year, I perceive it as a time of substantial growth, challenges, and, most importantly, enjoyment! But what did I truly learn, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Initial Anxieties: Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the challenge of forging new friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day of settling into student accommodation, just a few days ahead of the start of term, I spent the entire day retreating in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and all it required was stepping outside of my comfort zone and engaging in small conversations with others who were also navigating similar experiences.

What did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always beneficial to make that first move. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable immediately, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied populace of students within the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

A significant challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the course material. There was clearly a stark increase from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind. However, here’s the reality: everyone experiences similar struggles. If you’re finding something hard to grasp, I can nearly guarantee that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This was arguably the most crucial lesson I acquired during my first year—reach out to your classmates and the faculty when you require support.

### The Significance of Support: Faculty and Well-Being Resources

On the topic of faculty, I cannot stress enough how amazing the Materials Science department is. The instructors and support personnel genuinely wish for your success and understand the hurdles students face. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year, addressing our worries and providing help. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the later part of the year, I regret not doing so sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to connect with the staff on a more personal level, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are countless avenues to engage with faculty, and creating these connections can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary lesson? Don’t hesitate to use the available support. You can never have too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts: Development and Self-Assurance

Looking back on the past year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was mostly unfounded. With the extensive array of support options available from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve understood that I’m never truly alone. More importantly, I’ve learned how to manage the stresses of exams and deadlines while also enjoying myself and maximizing my university experience.

In summary, my first year in Materials Science and Engineering has been a life-changing adventure. It’s been a voyage of personal development, new friendships, and academic challenges, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. If you’re about to embark on your own university path, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ve got this!
