**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and cautious, stepping into such an unfamiliar environment seemed like a formidable task. Now, as I look back on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, thrilling challenges, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you are a prospective student reading this, you might share similar feelings. On my first day at student housing, just before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I have forged some of the best friendships I have ever experienced.

The pivotal moment occurred when I chose to venture beyond my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with others who were experiencing similar sentiments. Gradually, these dialogues evolved into friendships, leading me to discover a second family here at Imperial. My foremost takeaway? Embrace that leap of faith right from the outset. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Challenges

Adapting to the academic demands and the intricacies of the material was yet another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university-level coursework proved tough, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It can be easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when surrounded by so many gifted peers.

What guided me through this was realizing that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Staff

One of the highlights of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science faculty. They genuinely care about students’ success and consistently demonstrate empathy towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our worries and offering guidance.

While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early in the year, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with staff members. This ended up being tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can dramatically enhance your university experience. My tip? Fully utilize the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. Thanks to the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of happiness and fun.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has taught me the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone, seeking assistance when necessary, and embracing the opportunities that present themselves.

If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, understand that feeling nervous is completely normal. But also recognize that you will grow, adapt, and flourish in ways you might never have anticipated.
