**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was about to kick off my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar was quite daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and numerous enjoyable moments, I can assert that it has been a life-changing experience. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A significant challenge I confronted was making friendships. For many incoming students, this ranks among the top concerns about beginning university. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can affirm with pride that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known.

The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in light conversation with those who found themselves in similar circumstances.

What lesson did I take away? That crucial first step at the year’s commencement is essential. If you’re feeling hesitant or unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a rich tapestry of backgrounds at Imperial, you’re sure to discover peers who resonate with your passions and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

Adapting to the demands and complexity of university-level coursework was another major hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you measure up.

What aided me the most was the realization that everyone shared similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The critical takeaway is to seek assistance—be it from your classmates or the teaching staff. This perhaps constitutes the most vital lesson I acquired in my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### The Value of Supportive Educators

On the subject of support, the faculty within the Materials department have been outstanding. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing direction.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was among the bold steps I took at the year’s outset, and it became a deeply rewarding experience. It allowed me to strengthen connections with faculty members, which has been incredibly valuable.

There are numerous avenues to connect with educators, and I wholeheartedly recommend doing so. Whether through academic guidance or pastoral care, the support provided exists for a purpose—be sure to make use of it!

### Insights Gained

Looking back on this year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt prior to commencing university—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.

This year has taught me how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and amusement. It has illustrated the importance of stepping beyond my comfort zone, seeking help, and seizing the opportunities that present themselves.

To anyone gearing up to begin their university journey: take that leap, be authentic, and remember that support is always nearby.
