**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to begin my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on this academic year, I recognize it as a transformative time filled with growth, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights did I gain from this journey, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Difficulty of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the task of making new friends. If you are a future student perusing this, you might resonate with the same worry. On my initial day at student housing, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture outside and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever known.

Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who connect with my interests and experiences. It all began with casual conversations and bonding with others who were sharing similar experiences. What did I learn? Taking that first step of courage at the year’s start is vital. If you’re not ready or comfortable immediately, don’t fret. There will be numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities to connect with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with you.

### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second was even sharper. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others engrossed in their studies and wonder if you measure up.

What assisted me during these times was understanding that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—be it from your classmates or the faculty. This is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your freshman year.

### The Supportive Faculty in Materials Science
On the topic of faculty, I cannot stress enough how amazing the Materials department is. The professors and support staff are genuinely invested in your success and are compassionate towards the challenges students encounter. They uphold open lines of communication throughout the year and are consistently ready to lend a hand.

While I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had done so earlier. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to foster connections with staff members. Building relationships with the faculty is invaluable, and there are numerous ways to accomplish this. My key takeaway? Utilize the support offered to you—whether it’s academic, pastoral, or social. You can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained and Looking Forward
This year has taught me that the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even during the year—was often unfounded. With the immense support available from faculty and fellow students, I discovered I was never genuinely alone. More significantly, I learned how to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines while still carving out moments of joy and fun.

As I contemplate my first year, I recognize how far I’ve progressed—not solely in academics but also personally. The obstacles I encountered propelled me to grow, and the friendships I’ve forged have enriched my life in ways I couldn’t have foreseen. To anyone on the brink of commencing their university journey: embrace the nerves, take that leap, and trust that you will discover your path.
