**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, dread, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been timid and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. However, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the process of making friends. If you’re a future student reading this, you might be experiencing similar anxieties. On my moving day, just days before classes started, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with certainty that I’ve formed some of the best friendships in my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with individuals who were equally anxious.

So, what did I come to realize? I recognized that the initial leap of faith is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking sessions and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse community at the course and university, you are likely to find those who share your interests.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a marked increase in difficulty from A-levels, and the transition between the first and second terms proved even more demanding. Being immersed in such an environment can undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind. However, one thing that assisted me was acknowledging that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you’re confused about something, the likelihood is that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from your peers or faculty. This was perhaps the most crucial lesson I learned in my first year: seeking help is vital.

### The Value of Faculty Support

Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about your success and understand the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to address any challenges we may face. Regrettably, I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the year’s onset, I took the initiative by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This opportunity allowed me to foster relationships with faculty members, which has been incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My primary takeaway is to seize the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has illustrated that the apprehensive emotions I experienced prior to and during university were largely unfounded. With the extensive array of support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never isolated. I’ve learned to balance having fun while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines. Looking back, I’m thankful for the challenges and the personal growth they have facilitated.
