**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding what awaited me. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted, stepping into this new chapter was intimidating. Looking back on the previous academic year, I now view it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and most importantly, enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Building Friendships: An Intimidating Yet Fulfilling Journey

One of the most challenging aspects I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this might be a concern for you too. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day secluding myself in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family.

What did I take away from this experience? The essential part is to take that first step, even when it seems daunting. If you’re not prepared to jump in right away, that’s perfectly fine—there will be many ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with others. And above all, be genuine. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was quite pronounced, with the jump from the first to the second term proving to be even more daunting. Being in such a rigorous atmosphere can occasionally shake your self-assurance, particularly when witnessing others studying and feeling as if you’re lagging behind.

But here’s the reality: everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find yourself puzzled by something, it’s likely that others are too. The most valuable lesson I gained in my first year was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Don’t hesitate to ask for help; teamwork is essential for success.

### Support from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the backing from the Materials Science department has been exceptional. The lecturers and tutors sincerely want students to succeed, and they are aware of the hurdles we encounter. They keep communication lines open throughout the year, addressing any issues we might have.

Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started sooner. At the outset, I took a bold step by becoming a Year Well-being Representative, which helped me connect with staff members. This experience was invaluable, and I strongly advise you to engage with your lecturers and tutors. They are there to support you, and you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

To sum up, this year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was largely unwarranted. With the ample support available from both staff and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never on my own. More critically, I’ve learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while fully enjoying the university experience.
