**My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering: A Reflection**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and uncertainty as I geared up to embark on my first-year adventure in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has always been somewhat introverted, plunging into university life felt like a significant challenge. Now, as I look back on the last academic year, I recognize it as a time of considerable personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself currently?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making
One of the most daunting parts of entering university was the prospect of meeting new people. If you are an incoming student, this might be your biggest concern as well. On my first day at the student residence, I spent countless hours in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I’m proud to say I’ve built some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered have become a second family to me.
What enabled me to change? Taking that first step of courage. Making small talk with others who were equally apprehensive turned out to be the key. If you’re not quite ready to jump in immediately, don’t worry—there are numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities to engage with others. The most crucial takeaway I gleaned is simply to remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to find others who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the workload and academic demands was another considerable challenge. Transitioning from A-levels to university-level education proved difficult, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more distinct. It’s common to feel swamped or doubt your capabilities when observing others seemingly flourishing.
What helped me during those times was acknowledging that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was grappling with similar issues, and if I couldn’t grasp a concept, it was likely that others were struggling as well. The best advice I can offer is to reach out for assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Learning to seek help is arguably the most essential skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Helpful Staff
Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are extraordinary. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept channels of communication open and were always prepared to address our inquiries.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner. One of my smartest choices was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal encounters, engaging with your lecturers and tutors is one of the wisest moves you can make. My key takeaway? Make full use of all the available support—you can never have too much aid!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during my university journey—was frequently misplaced. With the extensive support system from staff and peers, I was never truly alone. I’ve mastered the art of balancing academic stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun.
Beginning university can seem overwhelming, but it also presents an incredible chance for growth. Embrace the challenges, take bold steps, and remember that assistance is always available.
