**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quite introverted, plunging into this new experience felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and cherished experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you may share the same feelings. On my first day in student housing, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, feeling too daunted to step out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can say with confidence that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. These connections have become a second family for me, both at university and within my course. What was the turning point? Making the effort to engage in casual conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.
The most crucial lesson I absorbed is that venturing out of your comfort zone early on pays off. If you aren’t prepared to do so immediately, don’t fret—there will be countless ice-breaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just stay true to yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to discover others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university coursework was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. At times, it was easy to feel inundated and question my capabilities, especially in comparison to my peers.
What aided me in this transition was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, chances are others are grappling with it as well. The essential approach is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This may very well be the most vital skill to acquire during your first year.
### The Supportive Faculty
On the subject of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and support staff sincerely care about student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They keep open lines of communication throughout the year and are always willing to listen to any concerns.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support system until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to establish connections with staff, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous pathways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Capitalize on the support and resources available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Major Lessons Learned
In reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With a vast array of support options from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. This year has equipped me with the ability to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with joyful moments and fun.
Thus, to anyone gearing up to commence their university journey: embrace the obstacles, take those courageous steps, and don’t hesitate to seek help when necessary. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated and emerge more resilient on the other side.
