**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was about to begin my journey as a fresh student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had previously been quite introverted, venturing into the unknown was far from comfortable. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can’t help but ponder the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was the endeavor to make friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may share similar concerns. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the beginning of term, I found myself retreating to my room for hours, too daunted to step outside and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can assuredly say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life—friends who have become like a second family.
How did I achieve this? It commenced with small initiatives, such as engaging in light conversation with others who were equally anxious. I discovered that taking early risks is worthwhile. If you’re not prepared right away, don’t fret—there will be countless social events and opportunities to bond with others. Most crucially, I realized that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse array of individuals at Imperial, you’re likely to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another notable challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the jump from the first term to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when observing peers studying and wondering if you’re keeping pace.
What aided me during these trying times was the acknowledgment that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are as well. My best piece of advice is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Cultivating the ability to seek support is one of the most crucial skills you can hone in your first year.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The instructors and tutors are genuinely invested in students’ success and empathize with the difficulties we encounter. They uphold open communication throughout the year and are always eager to assist.
Although I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Taking on the role of a well-being representative for the year was a significant leap for me, but it turned out to be one of my best choices. It allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the available support systems—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
This year has imparted valuable lessons, revealing that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often baseless. With the abundant support from both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I was never truly isolated. More importantly, I discovered how to balance the pressure from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Reflecting on this past year, I recognize a journey of growth, resilience, and unforgettable experiences. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, understand that feeling nervous is completely natural—but also trust that you’ll navigate your way, just as I did.
