**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty as I geared up to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Having always been someone who tends to be introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase was a formidable challenge. Now, reflecting on an academic year enriched with development, obstacles, and abundant joy, I can assertively claim it was a life-changing experience. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was establishing friendships. For many incoming students, this is one of the primary concerns about initiating university life, and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the semester starting, I was holed up in my room all day, too apprehensive to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can boast that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The pivotal moment arrived when I compelled myself to engage in casual conversations with others who were navigating the same situation as I was. Gradually, these interactions evolved into significant friendships, and I now regard my friends at Imperial as a second family. What have I gleaned from this? It is essential to take that first step of courage. Even if you may not feel prepared or at ease right away, fret not—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a rich diversity within the Imperial community, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and beliefs.

### Adjusting to the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was acclimatizing to the increased workload and the intricate nature of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was quite pronounced, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s natural to feel inundated or second-guess your capabilities, especially when observing others studiously thriving.

What aided me in maneuvering through this was recognizing that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, it’s highly likely that others are as well. The crucial part is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek help early in my first year was arguably the most beneficial skill I acquired.

### Appreciating the Supportive Faculty in Materials
On the subject of faculty, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials department is. The lecturers and support team genuinely care about student success and show understanding toward the challenges we encounter. They keep open channels of communication throughout the academic year, addressing our worries and offering support.

Although I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done it sooner. Early on, I made a decision to serve as a year well-being representative, which helped me build relationships with the staff. This turned out to be a priceless experience. Whether through formal positions or informal meetings, forming connections with the staff is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My primary lesson here? Utilize the support that is available to you—there is no such thing as too much help.

### Insights Gained
Looking back on the previous year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university, and even throughout the year, was frequently baseless. With the abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. This year has imparted lessons on how to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and personal development.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a voyage of self-exploration, fortitude, and connection. To any future students reading this: take that plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to lean on the support systems surrounding you. You will be astonished at how much you can evolve in just a single year.
