**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I began a journey that filled me with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt like a lot to handle. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize a time characterized by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was the task of making friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share the same fears. On my initial day at student accommodation, just days before classes kicked off, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to say I’ve forged some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who genuinely feel like family.

What changed? It all began with casual conversations and linking up with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings as me. My primary lesson from this journey is that taking that first step is essential. If you’re not completely ready or at ease, that’s fine—plenty of icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others will come your way. Above all, just stay true to yourself. With such a rich mix of individuals at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the demands of the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more formidable. It’s quite easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when you notice others studying and wonder if you’re falling behind.

What guided me through these forays was the understanding that everyone else is facing the same situation. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, likely, others are too. The key takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to reach out for help is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate during your first year.

### Fostering Relationships with Supportive Staff

Speaking of assistance, the faculty within the Materials department are truly remarkable. They sincerely want students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were consistently ready to address our issues.

I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, and I wish I had seized that opportunity sooner. At the beginning, I took one significant step by becoming a year well-being representative. This experience allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can profoundly impact your university journey. My advice? Take full advantage of the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have enough assistance!

### Key Takeaways

Looking back on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was often baseless. With a wide array of support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. This year has instilled in me the ability to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with exhilarating moments of enjoyment.

As I contemplate the future, I feel increasingly assured and enthusiastic about what lies ahead. If there’s one piece of advice I’d give to new students, it’s this: embrace the challenges, lean into the support surrounding you, and don’t hesitate to take that leap.
