**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and a sense of the unknown regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar was a nerve-wracking challenge. Now, as I ponder the past academic year, I perceive a path rich with personal development, obstacles, and innumerable moments of happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered early on was the task of making friends. For many incoming students, this is one of the primary concerns about starting university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, just days prior to classes starting, I spent an entire day tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life—friends who feel like an extended family.

What assisted me? Taking incremental steps, such as initiating light conversations with individuals who were equally new and apprehensive. I realized that taking that initial leap of faith at the year’s outset is crucial. If you’re not quite ready, don’t panic—there are abundant icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I found that authenticity is the best policy. With a range of diverse individuals at university, you’re guaranteed to encounter those who share your passions and principles.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material was another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your competencies when you observe others studying and wonder if you measure up.

What enabled me to navigate these experiences was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, there’s a good chance others are too. The best piece of advice I can share is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is one of the most essential skills to cultivate during your initial year.

### Aid from the Materials Department
On the subject of assistance, the personnel in the Materials department have been outstanding. They truly want students to thrive and show understanding towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open communication and were always ready to address our worries.

Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support available until late in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One bold step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster relationships with faculty members, which proved incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual exchanges, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself. My key takeaway? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the trepidation I felt—both prior to beginning university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support available from faculty and fellow students, I realized that I was never truly isolated. More importantly, I learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of fun and enjoyment.

As I progress, I am thankful for the personal development I’ve undergone and the relationships I’ve formed. To any prospective students reading this: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and remember that assistance is always accessible.
