**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I look back on the last academic year, I recognize it as a time of profound personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?

### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections

One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was forming friendships. If you are a prospective student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, just days before the semester officially started, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships in my life.

These relationships have turned into my second family, both within my academic program and throughout the university. It all commenced with minor steps—making light small talk with others who were equally new and apprehensive as I was. What I took away from this journey is that taking that leap early on pays off. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be many icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who share your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles

Another major challenge was adapting to the curriculum’s workload and complexity. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the change from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your abilities, especially when you observe others studying rigorously.

What aided me in managing this was the understanding that everyone is dealing with the same issues. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or the faculty. This is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how fantastic the Materials department team is. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are well aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open and displayed empathy towards our difficulties.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, I regret not utilizing it sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it turned out to be one of my best choices. It enabled me to forge meaningful relationships with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly impact your university experience. My major takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I have gained a wealth of knowledge. The anxiety I experienced before embarking on my university journey, as well as during my time here, was often unwarranted. Numerous resources and support structures exist, from staff to fellow students, to help you navigate the challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to manage exam stress and looming deadlines while still enjoying moments of joy and camaraderie.

As I progress, I’m appreciative of the growth I’ve gone through and the bonds I’ve established. For anyone about to begin their university venture, remember: take the plunge, seek assistance, and remain authentic. You’ve got this!
