**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I look back on the past academic year, I recognize a time of tremendous personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the prospect of forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this might be a significant worry for you as well. I distinctly recall my first day in student housing—spending hours in my room, too anxious to go out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently share that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships of my life.
These bonds didn’t form instantly, but they began with small gestures—like engaging in casual conversations with others who were just as new and apprehensive as I was. Gradually, these connections flourished into a supportive family at Imperial.
What have I discovered? Taking that first step is always rewarding. Even if you’re not fully ready immediately, don’t fret—there’s an abundance of social events and chances to connect with others throughout the year. Most importantly, be genuine. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Demands
Adapting to the academic pressures of university was yet another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university coursework was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more challenging. It’s easy to become disheartened or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and apparently thriving.
What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp certain concepts, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. This became perhaps the most vital lesson I took away from my first year: don’t shy away from asking for help.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of help, the staff within the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue with us, addressing our needs and providing assistance.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the support resources available until later in the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. However, one proactive step I took early on was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual encounters, connecting with the staff is one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself. They are there to help, so make the most of the resources and support they provide—you can never have too much!
### Key Takeaways
Upon reflection, this year has imparted significant lessons. The anxious feelings I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—were often unwarranted. With the extensive support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated.
I’ve learned how to navigate stress from exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of happiness and enjoyment. Most importantly, I’ve learned to welcome the challenges and opportunities that accompany university life.
If you’re about to begin your own university adventure, know that it’s perfectly normal to feel apprehensive. But also understand that you will grow, adjust, and find your niche. Take those leaps, seek assistance, and relish the journey—it’s an experience unlike any other.
