**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt about what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt intimidating. However, reflecting now, I realize a year filled with development, obstacles, and memorable experiences unfolded. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you are a prospective student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, I can proudly say that I’ve cultivated some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. These bonds have turned into a second family for me, both within my program and across the university. All it took was a little small talk with individuals who were experiencing the same things I was.

What did I take away from this? Making that first move to connect with others is always beneficial. Even if you’re not feeling prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, remain authentic to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable hurdle was adjusting to the academic demands and the intricacy of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you see classmates studying and wonder if you’re keeping pace.

What aided my navigation through this was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If you find yourself struggling to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are too. The important thing is to seek assistance—whether it’s from your peers or the instructional staff. This has perhaps been the most essential lesson I’ve learned throughout my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### The Encouraging Materials Department

Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials department are remarkable. They truly wish for students to excel and are fully aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld transparent communication with us and demonstrated immense understanding towards our challenges.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the support services available until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with them sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the initial steps I took. This position allowed me to foster connections with staff members, resulting in incredibly beneficial relationships. There are various avenues to connect with personnel, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My lesson? Utilize the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Learnings Gained

Looking back, this year has enlightened me to the fact that the anxiety I felt before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. Many resources and support structures, from staff to fellow students, are in place to assist you in overcoming challenges. I learned that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to juggle academic pressures with joyful and enjoyable moments.

As I reminisce about my first year, I am proud of the progress I’ve made. From conquering my initial fears to seizing the opportunities around me, this year has represented a journey of development, resilience, and exploration.
