**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone traditionally shy and introverted, stepping into this new world was daunting. However, now that I look back on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and countless memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Navigating the Difficulty of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of entering university was the prospect of making friends. If you are a future student, you might share this concern as well. I distinctly remember my first day in student housing. I stayed in my room all day, overwhelmed by nerves and unable to introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I have formed some of the best friendships in my life.

These connections were not instantaneous; rather, they started with small efforts—engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain. As time went on, these relationships evolved into a second family here at Imperial. My suggestion? Embrace that leap early in the year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others. Most crucially, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse student body, you’re destined to meet those who align with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the heavier workload and the intricacy of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.

What aided me in managing this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, the likelihood is that others are too. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. This has perhaps been the most critical lesson I gleaned in my first year: don’t hesitate to reach out for help.

### The Value of Caring Staff
Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials department have been nothing short of remarkable. They sincerely wish for students to flourish and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they consistently engaged with us, addressing our worries and providing counsel.

Though I did not fully engage with the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early in the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, a position that helped me forge connections with staff members. This experience proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key lesson? Make the most of the supportive resources available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Major Takeaways from My Initial Year
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I felt—both prior to and during university—was often unjustified. Abundant resources and support systems are at your disposal, ranging from faculty to fellow students, to help you face challenges. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

This year has been a transformative journey, and I’m thankful for the growth and experiences it has afforded me. To anyone gearing up for their own university journey: embrace the challenges, seek help, and relish the experience.
