**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in the [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) program. As someone who had consistently been quiet and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar was well outside my comfort zone. Now, upon reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of tremendous personal development, trials, and plenty of enjoyment. But what specifically did this year reveal to me, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was the challenge of forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share similar concerns. On my first day of moving into student housing, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with a brief exchange of words with individuals who were equally anxious.
What did I gain from this experience? The essence lies in taking that first step, regardless of how uneasy it may feel. Don’t fret if you’re not prepared right away—countless ice-breaking activities and avenues to meet new people will arise. Most crucially, remain authentic. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to connect with those who reflect your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic workload and the complexities of the material. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and an even steeper climb from the first term to the second. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when observing others pouring their efforts into studying. Nevertheless, one of the most essential lessons I acquired was that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a subject, it’s likely that others are too.
The best piece of advice I can offer is to seek assistance. This may be the most critical understanding to grasp in your initial year. Don’t hesitate to connect with your peers or the academic staff when you require clarity or guidance.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of staff, I cannot stress enough how encouraging the Materials department is. The educators and tutors genuinely desire for you to thrive, and they recognize the hurdles students encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year and are perpetually ready to lend a hand. I didn’t fully capitalize on the support available until the year’s conclusion, and I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to cultivate relationships with the staff, which has been incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My primary lesson? Don’t hesitate to tap into the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university, and even throughout the year, was frequently unfounded. There are a multitude of support mechanisms established, spanning from faculty to fellow students, that can alleviate those worries. I’ve recognized that I’m never really alone, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoying university life alongside the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
