**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, trepidation, and doubt about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone like me—introverted and quiet—taking such a plunge was far from a familiar experience. Now, as I reflect on this academic year, I recognize a time of substantial personal development, obstacles, and numerous joyful moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I faced was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this is a primary concern when beginning university, and it certainly was for me. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my program and throughout the university. It all commenced with casual chats with others who were equally anxious.

What did I discover? Taking that initial step at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not ready or don’t feel comfortable immediately, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that being genuine is the best strategy. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who align with you.

### Facing the Academic Hurdles
Another significant challenge was adapting to the coursework and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was noticeable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.

What assisted me in coping with this? Firstly, I reminded myself that everyone was in the same situation. If I was struggling to comprehend something, the likelihood was that others were as well. The key was to reach out for assistance—be it from peers or faculty. Learning to seek help is perhaps the most essential skill to cultivate during your first year.

### The Encouraging Staff in Materials
In terms of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open channels of communication, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not having done so earlier. At the year’s outset, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to form connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the support systems accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, it has taught me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during my university experience—was often unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, from faculty to fellow students, to help navigate challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of fun and enjoyment.

As I look ahead, I’m thankful for the growth, friendships, and experiences this year has brought. To anyone about to begin their own university adventure: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You can do this!
