**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Being someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase of life seemed frightening. Now, reflecting on a year of academic achievements, challenges, and happiness, I can assert that it was a life-changing experience. What insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting bits about entering university was the thought of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your major concerns too. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. These connections have turned into my second family during my time at Imperial.

What enabled me to surpass this initial challenge? It all began with engaging in small conversations. I soon understood that everyone shared the same feelings of nervousness I had. Taking that bold step to reach out to others made a huge difference. My tip? Don’t shy away from putting yourself out there, particularly at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready immediately, that’s fine—there will be many icebreaker events and gatherings to connect with others. Above all, be genuine. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adjusting to the rigorous academic environment of university presented another major obstacle. The leap from A-level studies to university coursework was marked, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing others seemingly thriving. It’s simple to feel inadequate in such a competitive setting.

What carried me through these moments of doubt was the epiphany that I wasn’t isolated. If I struggled with a concept, it’s likely others were too. The core lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or academic staff, reaching out for help is one of the most crucial skills to cultivate in your first year.

### Establishing Connections with Faculty

Speaking of support, the Materials Science staff at Imperial has been exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to excel and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open communication channels and were proactive in addressing our concerns. Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral resources available until later, I wish I had done so earlier.

Taking on the role of a year wellbeing representative was another significant step I took early on. This position allowed me to forge relationships with academic staff, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My greatest takeaway? Utilize the assistance and resources that are offered to you—there’s no such thing as too much support.

### Insights Gained

Looking back, this year has illuminated that much of the apprehension I experienced both before and during university was often unwarranted. With the multitude of support options available—from staff to peers—there’s always assistance accessible. I have come to realize that I am never entirely alone and that balancing the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment is achievable.

As I brace myself for the next chapter of my university adventure, I feel a surge of confidence and excitement about what’s to come. To anyone embarking on their own journey, keep in mind: take the plunge, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You can do this!
